Genealogy
a guide to resources at SUNY Potsdam Libraries and the Internet
Crumb Library does not have a genealogy research collection, as such. We do have some resources that can be used for local genealogical research, as described below. Genealogical research collections are available at these area libraries:
Bibliographies of genealogies:
- Genealogies cataloged by the Library of Congess since 1986. (Ref CS 47.A1 L53 1991)
- American and English genealogies in the Library of Congress (Ref CS 47.A1 U5 1967). 1919.
- Index to American genealogies (Ref CS 47.A1 I5 1967). 1900. An index to genealogies and genealogical material in town and county histories, historical society publications, biographies, periodicals, etc.
Biography:
There are many sources for biography. Of note are: American National Biography (Ref CT 213.A68 1999) and the Abridged Biography and Genealogy Master Index, (Ref. CT 214.A27) and many biographical dictionaries, Who's whos, and Biographical Books, 1950-1980 (Ref CT 104.A1 B68 1980).
Census records:
-- decennial population censuses
Crumb Library has federal census rolls for St. Lawrence Co. (and parts of some alphabetically adjacent counties) for the population censuses that have been released. These are in the microfilm cabinets at XHA 1. Ask at the Reference Desk about use of the microfilm. Other census records can be obtained through the Census Microfilm Rental Program. Fees are modest. Ask at the Reference Desk for details.
- The 1920 federal population census. (Ref HA 201.A1 U5483 1920 ) an index to the reels of this census. Indexes for the earlier censuses are nearby. See note below about census reels.
- A good description of the information contained in each of the censuses is provided in The Source: a guidebook of American genealogy (Ref CS 49.S65 1984). Even more detailed description is found in Population information in twentieth century census volumes: 1900-1940 (Ref HA 214.A1 S46) and the companion volumes for the 19th century and later 20th century.
- A Century of population growth, 1790-1900. (Ref HA 195.A5 1967) A very interesting collection of statistics, including names from the 1790 census.
- New York State census records, 1790-1925 (Ref HA 545.A1 D68 1981). A description of the New York state censuses, and where schedules can be found. The New York State census reports in Crumb Library collection do not include personal names, they are aggregated data only.
- Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS-98), created at the University of Minnesota. Twenty-seven high-precision samples of the American population drawn from fourteen federal censuses, 1850-2000.
